Big Dave is David Charles Carr, uncle and namesake of the children's father, David, and the person behind the name Big Dave Legacy Trust.
Big Dave was one of eight children in the J. Douglas Carr family. He grew up alongside his brothers and sisters, but David was different in a way that made him pretty special.
Although David grew into a big, bearded man—and definitely looked the part—his mind and heart remained like those of a child. He approached people with an innocence and trust that stayed with him throughout his life.
David loved being part of the family. He enjoyed family gatherings, holidays, trips, and being around the children. He could be playful and funny, sometimes intentionally and sometimes just by being David. His twinkling blue eyes and crooked grin were unmistakably his.
There was a sweetness and simplicity about David that could make you see the world a little differently.
His family often thought of the Savior's words:
“Suffer the little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 19:14
David passed away in June of 2015 at the age of 51. By then he was very much a grown man, but inside he was still the same sweet, trusting child his family had known and loved all those years.
Years later, when Big Dave's mother and brother established a trust to help provide for David's six special needs children, naming it after Big Dave just seemed to fit.
Big Dave understood, in his own way, what it meant to depend on other people for things most of us take for granted. But that dependence never made his life less valuable. If anything, David taught his family just the opposite.
That idea is at the heart of Big Dave Legacy Trust.
We want the six children the Trust serves to have every opportunity to be safe, cared for, included, happy—and simply loved for who they are.
That's something Big Dave would have understood.
